History

Weebly was founded in 2006. It was created for students at Penn State as all the students were required to maintain an online portfolio. The software was created to make it easy for anyone of the students to build a personal website.

Requirements

For self-hosted websites the server some of the requirements are: LinuxServer, Apache (64 bit), PHP 5.3 or higher, OpenSSL Library and Header version 1.0.2k, Apache/httpd user needs permission to alter files in the publish directory, and FTP Passive Mode enabled.

Hosted or Self-Hosted

Weebly is a hosted website platform where all the components needed to host a website are available with at single monthly price. A user may also self-host if they choose.

Cost

Weebly can be free. though it comes with a few imitations such as only 500MB of storage, a Weebly-based domain name, ads, and a 10MB maximum file size. You can also purchase personal accounts with several payment tiers available to meet the user’s needs. Plans start anywhere from simply removing Weebly branding and connecting your own custom domain all the way to full business features.
